Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Storm.

After enduring heavy downpours that caused flooding across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm weather for this time of year.

Record-Shattering Temperatures

On Friday midday, the thermometer climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established just last year.

"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.

Public Health Warnings

Forecasters stated that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice suggested:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
  • Not leaving anyone unattended in a car.

A Dramatic Shift

This dramatic increase in heat comes on the heels of a intense storm system that pummeled the region last week. That storm delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to higher elevations, triggering mudslide risks for many residents.

Sadly, the severe weather also caused a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.

Weekend Outlook

The outlook suggests a cooldown will arrive. The heat were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.

Other locales that reached the 90-degree mark were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to reach the upper eighties.

Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate weather in the 80s, with cooler weather likely for the following week.
