Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution After Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Various sections of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that engulfs the city as winter sets in.

However earlier this year, the recently formed local administration approached the highest court to request a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital showed contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements seen during the festival in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing deteriorating air quality in Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe readings ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in the city is caused by a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent states of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in the city.
