Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

• Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
