On Friday, Pam Bondi designated interim US attorney Jay Clayton to oversee an inquiry into political adversaries of the President and their connections with the late financier. This move came just after Trump directed her to initiate the investigation.
During an announcement, Bondi commended Jay Clayton as “among the nation’s top prosecutors”. She stated, “This case will be addressed with speed and honesty to ensure public transparency.”
This action contrasts with a July memo from justice department officials which stated that documents related to Epstein lacked grounds for further inquiries. As per the memo, investigators “lacked sufficient evidence to pursue cases against other parties.”
The announcement comes as increasing pressure from Trump on lawmakers to resist the full release of files concerning Epstein before an key congressional decision next week. Several lawmakers are expected to support the release.
Recently released communications from Jeffrey Epstein have brought attention to the president’s previous connections with the sex trafficker, revealing information that his knowledge of Epstein’s behavior exceeded prior admissions.
On Friday, Trump announced he would direct the DOJ to investigate connections between Epstein and Democratic figures, specifically naming Bill Clinton, Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman. Interestingly, he also described the “Epstein hoax” as a “deception”.
Additional developments included appeals to safeguard public lands, objections of an antisemitism watchdog, and a court approval for a resolution in the Purdue Pharma lawsuit.
